Bar Modelling

Curriculum

Bar Modelling is a way of developing mathematical diagrams that bridge the gap between concrete mathematical experiences and abstract representations and is used across al year groups, as it can be used to represent problems involving the four operations, ratio and proportion, and fractions and percentages.  It can also be used to represent unknowns in calculations and as such can be a precurser to more symbolic algebra.

The table below contains documents that show the progression of Bar Modelling as used at St Thomas'.  There is an introduction and overview of the types of bar model and key models for the 4 main operations.  The progression is then shown in the Stages 1 - 4.
