School Curriculum Advice for Parents

Happy New Year! We hope that the information below will give you helpful details of planned work for this term. Please assist your son/daughter in exploring and discussing these areas. We trust you continue to find the homework diary useful and intend to continue to suggest activities in it.

All year groups will be having English and Mathematics lessons every day.

The most important way to help your child is to read with them on a daily basis. The more you read together the better they will do in school and (this is not an overstatement) in life!

We will also continue to suggest spellings and times tables to learn in the homework diary too as this type of work is also considered very beneficial. Please continue to refer to the homework diary for general reminders about expectations, such as those relating to school uniform. Thank you!



Examples of areas we plan to cover

Art & Design
We will be exploring work of the 20 Century Spanish artist Picasso. Particularly looking at his Cubism style, whilst improving our drawing, painting and collage skills.

D&T
Using our knowledge from Geography and English we will be creating an information text about Spain in the form of a pop-up book.

Geography

This term’s unit is ‘Catalonia here we come!’ This unit begins with an overview of Europe, Spain and the region of Catalonia, and then focuses on Barcelona, enabling children to compare and contrast with other areas of the world.

Computing
Children will be learning about the digital footprint that we create through our use of the internet and how we can keep ourselves safe online. Children will be collecting information using a data logger about our school environment; they will then interpret this information using a database.


Music

This term the children will be having class keyboard lessons. They will learn how to read music and find the notes on the keyboard. There will be opportunities for composition and performance.


P.E.

Games: This term, the children will be working on a variety of ball skills, including how to apply these to small-sided competitive games.
Gymnastics: This term our focus is on balance and using a range of travelling, jumping and turning movements.
Dance: Our theme is on sound. We will be linking to our work in Science.

R.E.
Our RE lessons focus on three areas this term: Parables of Jesus - turning the world upside down; Judaism – Moses, the Exodus and Pesach and Changing Relationships – betrayal and forgiveness.


Science
We are investigating sound this term. We will think about the way we hear sound, the way sound travels and how to vary the pitch (high/low) and volume (loud/quiet) of a range ofinstruments. We will use our knowledge and understanding of sound to create our own musical instruments.

Spanish
This term we will be looking at different modes of transport and will be explaining how we travel to different areas. We will also be looking at similarities and differences between our culture and the Spanish culture.

P.S.H.E
Our focus during the first half term will be on anti-bullying. We will be looking at ways to recognise what bullying is and when it occurs. We will discuss and act out situations when bullying behaviour occurs and come up with suggestions and practical ways to deal with it through role play. During the second half term we will be learning about British Values. We will discuss what it means to be British, looking at the National Anthem and what it means, as well as discussing the stereotypes that are associated with being British.

  • research ideas at the local library and help your child to develop his/her library skills.
  • search the internet for relevant age appropriate websites and activities. (see the links section)
  • watch relevant television programmes that may support their work, or visit a museum or place of interest.
  • simply talk to your child about what they are learning.
