School Curriculum Advice for Parents


Welcome back after what we hope was a wonderful Christmas and New Year! We hope that this grid will give you helpful details of planned work for this new term. Please assist your son/daughter in exploring and discussing these areas. As you know we are committed to giving you clear information and guidance about what is being covered in school so that you can support this by talking with your children at home.

All year groups will be having English and Mathematics lessons every day. Details about their English and Mathematics lessons should come home weekly or at least fortnightly – please speak to your child’s teacher(s) if these updates are not in the school homework diary.

The most important way to help your children is to read with them on a daily basis.

We will also continue to suggest spellings and times tables to learn in the homework diary too as this type of work is also considered beneficial. Please continue to refer to the homework diary for general expectations, such as those relating to school uniform.

Examples of areas we plan to cover

Art & Design
We will be studying and evaluating the importance of Ancient Greek art. This will inform our own design and creation of Greek-style pots and masks.

D&T
We will be designing and making a Trojan Horse based on a wooden frame.

History
The children will be studying life in Ancient Greece and discovering the impact of that civilisation on our lives today.

Computing
This term we will be using our coding skills to make a presentation on the Ancient Greeks. The children will be doing their own research and will then create an animated presentation using the coding software, Scratch. We will also be learning about staying safe on mobile devices, particularly exploring the risks of location sharing.

Music

In music this term we will be linking to our history topic by composing themes for characters from a Greek myth. The children will need to consider how each theme should sound from their understanding of the story and will be able to use a range of instruments. There will also be opportunities for performance and drama during this unit of study.

P.E.
This term the children will be having lessons in: gymnastics, dance (based on the myth Theseus and the Minotaur) and games. The games sessions will include: Netball and multi-skills games.


P.S.H.E.
This half term we will explore stories that lead us to debate what is fair and honest; what it means to share fairly and what it means to treat everyone equally. After half term we will study the media and how it affects the way we feel about ourselves, what influences people’s views and how the media play a part in this.

R.E.

This term in R.E. we will be trying to answer the following questions about Christianity: "How can following God bring freedom and justice?” and "What difference does the resurrection make for Christians?" We will also be gaining an overview of a variety of other belief systems and values.

Science

In science this term, we will be learning about the Earth in Space. We will carry out our own research about the Solar System, find out about Major Tim Peake's role in the ISS space mission and investigate how the angle of the sun causes shadows to change throughout the day. Children will also be observing the way the moon changes each night.

Spanish

We will be looking at how to describe the classroom around us by learning the furniture names and vocabulary related to position e.g. next to, under. We will then use some of the same skills to talk about places found in a town.

In addition, you may also wish to:

  • research ideas at the local library and help your child to develop his/her library skills.
  • search the internet for relevant age appropriate websites and activities. (see the links section)
  • watch relevant television programmes that may support their work, or visit a museum or place of interest.
  • simply talk to your child about what they are learning!
